Wood turning is one of the well-known professions in the past. It was known in the time of the ancient Egyptians and is still today. We use wood turning to produce wooden works and designs with a wonderful appearance.

How to use a wood lathe:

  • We prepare a piece of wood according to the required sizes, it must be free of knots and cracks, and the piece must be square in shape, we determine the center of each end by drawing diagonal lines.
  • When using solid wood, we drill 3 mm using a hacksaw on the diagonal lines, then push the center into the hole and saw pieces.
  • We rinse the edges of the wood before turning, using a rabon machine.
  • We mark the piece of wood according to the shape to be executed, especially when using a regular lathe.
  • We loosen and move the movable crow set according to the length of the piece of wood to be drilled.
  • We insert the center and the piece of wood attached to it into the headstock spindle. We fix the second side in the moving crow set well, making sure to fix the piece of wood between the two centers.
  • The chisel rest is fixed to the lathe bed, it can be adjusted up and down in any position along the lathe bed, the chisel rests are available in several different lengths, then we use lathe chisels with handles, the long chisel blade is preferred; To control the cutting process, the chisel must be held with both hands so that we can control it, especially when using the lathe normally.
  • When using the semi-automatic lathe, a print is made according to the shape to be executed, then the print is fixed in the place designated for that, after which the chisel moves according to the desired shape.

Tools used while working on the lathe:

lathe chisels:

Concave chisels:

Available in a variety of sizes, common sizes are 6, 10, 13, 25 mm, these chisels are used to form a square piece into a round cylinder, which can be used to make hollow pieces.

Limit oblique chisels:

Used for the same purposes as concave chisels, they are very suitable for making fine-finish pieces and forming letters.

Square beak chisels:

Similar to manual chisels, they are used to perform the same operations as bevel chisels.

spear head chisels:

They make the same cuts as bevel-edged chisels, sometimes preferred; Because it is double-edged, it can cut in any direction without turning the chisel.

 Round beaked chisels:

It is used in shaping grooves and making smooth circular shapes, as well as in smoothing and polishing work. Less wide chisels cut concave shapes. The common width of these chisels is 25.19 mm.

Measurement tools:

Measuring tools are used in turning work to measure their diameters, plot the distances along their lengths, the outer and inner calipers are used to measure the exact diameters, the meter is also used to measure the upper distances, a ruler is placed on the chisel rest to convey the long measurements, the distances are marked on the surface with a pencil .
