The art of carving or engraving on wood is one of the arts that has its roots in human history, and perhaps we can say that the history of the art of carving or carving on wood began since man first brewed wood with a sharp tool.
This art is witnessing a wide spread at the present time and there are a large number of Iranian artists who are working on this art all over the country.
In some kind of this art, instead of the artist engraving the wood floor and highlighting the required drawing or engraving on it, he flatters different wooden pieces with their various natural colors and paves them side by side.
This art is very similar to the art of arranging mosaics. In the modern type of this art, the wood of ebony trees and shamshads are used to impart the blue color to the work, and the wood of jujube for its red color, however, artists often use walnut wood or the roots of herbs and forest trees that bear beautiful arches themselves.
Wood is the first material for the artist to carve on it, and this wood must have strength, sobriety, and free of wood knots; Which made artists resort to using strong and sober woods such as walnut trees, jujube, melts and the like, but Iranian artists often use walnut tree wood to produce their handicrafts, due to its abundance in various parts of the country.
Among the Iranian cities that are known for making carvings or carving on wood are the cities of Isfahan and Gulgayvan, where we see a great flowering of this art.
